West End Set To Sparkle As Christmas Market And Light Switch On Announced For Sunday, Nov 26

Oh, Christmas Tree. Get Ready for a BIG Christmas Light Switch On This November

The nights are getting darker, you’ve looked out your scarf and X Factor is taking over your weekend, it can mean only one thing; it’s time to get festive, the West End Christmas showcase is coming to town!

So mark Sunday, 26th November in your diaries as this year the West End Christmas light switch on is set to bigger and better than ever with more entertainment, shops and businesses coming together to sparkle at their annual festive showcase.

Once again, Vinicombe Street will be transformed into a winter wonderland as the Visit West End elves pop up an entertainment stage with live musical performances from local bands and rock choirs setting the Christmas feel-good mood before Bella – the mascot from the Beatson Cancer Charity, lights up the, twenty-foot Christmas tree. This new partnership with the Beatson will allow Glasgow to remember a loved one this Christmas through unique festive baubles and cards with proceeds going to this well-deserved cancer charity.

This year you’ll also discover something magical in the surrounding Lanes too; little ones can get excited about Santa by posting their letters to the North Pole through his dashing red post box which they can find on Ruthven Lane. Or they can ignite their imagination and enjoy the talents of their balloon modeller in Cresswell Lane.

Gift hunters meanwhile can meander their way through the festive market and pick up the perfect present, Christmas cards or enjoy a spot of food or drink from local businesses. From beautiful jewellery to local and artisan foodie gifts and products, you’ll find something for everyone at the festive market and surrounding shops. The area will be bustling until late with stores offering festive offers and treats.

Crafted by the Byres Road and Lanes Business Improvement District, the organisation behind Visit West End, their Christmas tree light switch on is bringing together local businesses, festive fun, incredible gifts and entertainment to shine the fairy lights on what you can find locally this Christmas, not to mention their twenty-foot Christmas tree lights being switched on by Bella from The Beatson Charity in a partnership that will see fundraising throughout the year.

The Beatson festive baubles and cards will available to buy from the Christmas market at the light switch on from volunteers.  Money raised will go towards ensuring Beatson Cancer Charity continue to provide the best services for their patients and families in Glasgow.

David Howat, Chair of the Byres Road & Lanes BID Company Ltd, said:

“We’re back; last year was such a success that we couldn't wait to spread some festive cheer and light up the West End with our Christmas tree again on Byres Road.

“It’s time to get excited Glasgow, we have secured some amazing local acts to perform, and this year the local shops and businesses will dazzle and surprise with what you can find locally on your doorstep.  So come down, support your local businesses and enjoy a large sprinkle of festive cheer and feel good atmosphere.”

Maisie Hamilton, Beatson Cancer Charity’s community fundraising manager, said:

“Beatson Cancer Charity is delighted to be working in partnership for the first time with Visit West End, the Byres Road and Lanes Bid.

“Our mascot Bella Beatson will be making a star appearance to turn on the Christmas Lights and our fantastic team of volunteers will be doing collections throughout the day and selling Christmas cards.

“Thanks to the support from Visit West End, Beatson Cancer Charity can continue to provide vital funding to patient and family support services, plus a range of specialist posts including nursing, radiography, physics and research-based staff as well as additional staff training and development.”
