It's all about vintage

Glasgow's only vintage hair and make up salon can be found wedged between The Bothy and The W2 Store in Ruthven Lane. A short walk along a well-groomed gravel path leads to the little cottage where The Girls in Pink work, and once you go through the door, it's like stepping back in time.

PinUps is all about vintage. This is evident in everything from how the salon has been carefully styled to the bright pink outfits that the team wears. I'm told that this used to be a tattoo parlour and that the walls were once black; a concept hard to imagine when sitting in the cosy, colourful salon.

Although she has only been based in Ruthven Lane for two years, owner Charly has a history with vintage that dates back a lot longer. Having grown up with a dad singing in a rockabilly band, she set up as a freelancer 26 years ago. The interest has been passed down to her daughter, who now works in the salon herself. Charly jokes that she had no choice but to start loving vintage.

The Girls in Pink, as they call themselves, were recently joined by nail technician Rebecca May whose services compliments the existing hair and make up team. Apart from numerous weddings and hen night makeovers, the PinUps team have also taken part in multiple TV and stage productions, helping to create an authentic vintage era look.

It's no surprise that The Girls in Pink decided to set up their salon in the West End, since the area has a reputation for welcoming anything retro and vintage. The salon is surrounded by famous vintage shops, including Starry Starry Night, Circa Vintage and Vintage Guru. Recently, PinUps have been collaborating with Pink Poodle, an independent fashion retailer on Byres Road.

You can read more about PinUps on their website, or visit their salon at no 10a Ruthven Lane. If you follow them on social media, you'll get all the latest news, including last minute discounts and promotions.
