Vinicombe Street is preparing for festive cheer – and hopefully no frost – as weather presenter Judith Ralston is set to switch on the Byres Road Christmas Tree Lights alongside Glaswegian unsung hero Allan Richardson this Sunday.
JUDITH RALSTON (MIDDLE) WITH JACQUETTA FROM PAPYRUS AND LESLIE FROM THE NANCY SMILLIE SHOP, BOTH OF WHICH ARE TAKING PART IN THE CHRISTMAS MARKET.
With nearly sixty entries from the public, nominating their local heroes, Allan was chosen to be the Guardian of the West End Christmas tree for his dedication to his job and humble, kind-natured personality. For the last 25 years he has worked tirelessly to keep the West End clean within the council’s street cleansing team, never missing a day on the job. An avid painter, he continues to paint Glasgow in his own unique way.
Forecasting clear skies and dry spells, Judith will be bringing a touch of festive magic to the Christmas light switch on extravaganza that marks the first time Byres Road has its own Christmas tree and a winter celebration of the incredible businesses in the area.
Starting from 12pm, local businesses will line Vinicombe Street and showcase Christmas gifts and crafts at a busy festive market, with live choirs providing the soundtrack to the festive switch on. The event will culminate with the lights on their twenty-foot Christmas tree being switched on by Judith and the guardian picked by the public.
Sunday, 27th November marks the start of a week-long promotions period for Byres Road, which leads up to the national Small Business Saturday (Saturday, 3rd December) – which encourages the public to shop locally.
Our team of volunteers will be handing out free booklets at the Christmas event highlighting star gifts, experiences and offers for many of the West End shops, restaurants and services. The booklet is also available to download online.
