The West End is a vibrant area packed full of fantastic shops, eateries, bars and service providers. It is a wonderful place to enjoy some retail therapy as you take in some of the best of what Byres Road and the Lanes has to offer.

Behind the scenes, there are many people who work hard to make the area the amazing place to visit that many know and love.

In this series, produced for the Visit West End blog, we will be speaking to the people behind some of your favourite businesses in the West End.

The first person in the series is Clare Gibson, store manager of M&S Simply Food at 165 Great George Street.

Clare has managed the store for one year and told us that she has been absolutely loving her time so far. She is well engaged as a member of the local business community and has sat on the board for Byres Road and the Lanes Business Improvement District since the Summer of 2020.

The shop’s prime location in the heart of the West End has made working there a great experience for her. She explained: “Working in the West End is like no location I’ve ever worked in before. The vibrancy, eclecticism and general buzz make it feel exciting no matter whether on a sunny day with people going to the Botanics and Kelvingrove for a picnic, or a rainy Friday night with the lights and music on Ashton Lane. As we say in Glasgow, it’s ‘pure dead brilliant’.”

Her store specialises in M&S’s fantastic range of food and drink items as well as life’s everyday essentials. When we asked her about her favourite product on the shop’s shelves, she said: “I’m not able to narrow it down to only one favourite product… I would probably choose something like Percy Pigs! Otherwise, I like the special occasion products that we do so well… Christmas food; birthday cakes; Dine in for 2, all the things that make family time even more precious. Aside from this, we have great ranges of what we call everyday ‘remarksable’ value products – the products that fill your larder and don’t need to be a special occasion to enjoy!”
