Welcome Refuweegee to Byres Road! Refuweegee opened its doors at 100 Byres the beginning of the month creating a fantastic new exhibition and gathering space. They are currently exhibiting ‘Claiming Back the Narrative’ showcasing photography from asylum seekers’ experience of life in Glasgow. The talented interior designer Leila Talmadge has beautifully painted murals throughout 100 Byres Road. The windows feature drawings by the artist Rae-Yen Song, and are inspired by the Glasgow coat of arms and the personal welcome packs that Refuweegee provide.
Refuweegeewas set up by Selina Hales in December 2015 to provide a warm welcome to forcibly displaced people arriving in Glasgow. As a result of the amazing response from people in Glasgow and beyond, they have provided over 2000 community-built, personal welcome packs and gained charitable status in September 2016.
Their aim is to enable the existing community to extend the friendly welcome that Glasgow is world renowned for. They do this through their welcome packs, their events and their volunteer opportunities. They try to provide everyone who wishes to get involved with an opportunity to do so; be it through writing a letter, donating essential items, joining them at an event or fundraising.
How to get involved
They have loads of ways that you can get involved and help welcome people to Glasgow and Scotland in true weegie style including your words, your time and your donations.
Every welcome pack that Refuweegee passes on contains a ‘Letter fae a local’. From postcards to post-it-notes, letters to pictures, as long as they are welcoming and kind then they’d love to receive them and pass them on.
- Post your letter:
100 Byres Road
Glasgow, G12 8TA
- Drop off at any Oxfam shop in and around Glasgow or one of their locations.
Whether it’s for an hour, an event or a weekend, you will help make a huge difference to them and the people that they welcome. From corporate charity days to individuals looking to get involved, they have something for everyone. Please get in touch with Hannah@refuweegee.co.uk.
Refuweegee delivers over 100 welcome packs every month, each one containing essential items like toiletries and stationery, Scottish items and your ‘Letters fae the locals’. They’ve put together a list of the items that go into their welcome packs in their Welcome Pack Appeal and donations guide and are hugely grateful for anything that you are able to contribute – items that they regularly run low on are toiletries and adult hats and gloves. They also need:
- Clothing – for ALL ages – but especially 4 years and up.
- Homeware/household items
- Toys and games– second-hand kids toys and games in good condition.
You can also buy t-shirts online.
